| 内容記述 | In 1867 Edward M. Gallaudet who was a president of the National College for the Deaf-mutes went to Europe for the purpose of the investigating the teaching methods of language for the deaf. He drew up a report on the state of deaf education in Europe. He made a proposal for the combined method of speech and sign. What is the combined method proposed by Dr. Gallaudet? What is the substructure of his combined method? "One of his contents of his proposal is that instruction in artificial speech and lip-reading be entered upon as early a day as possible; that all pupils on our primary department be afforded oppotunities of engaging in this, until it plainly appears that success is unlikely to crown their efforts." He evaluated that the best method was the one based mainly on sign, adding speech to a greater or less extent. The philosophy underlining the manual method is historically opposed to that of articulation method. (1) Dumbness is considered as an abnormal state of being. The command of spoken language is absolutely essential to make the deaf-mutes normal. (2) Dumbness is not regarded as an abnormal state. The competant channel of communication is approved Dr. Gallaudet supported the latter view. The real philosophy of Dr. Gallaudet, which recommended the speech, seems to be similar and close to the articulatrion method. However, that is not actually the case. He proposed the instruction of speech on the basis of the philosophy of the manual method. | |||||||||||
