 note = {In this paper, the writer tried to trace the footsteps of our pioneers who introduced the literature of Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) to Japanese readers by way of translation, or adaptation. Some of them were literary or academic giants, like Shoyo Tsubouchi or Yoshio Nakano. Some of them were attracted by the dramatic elements in Scott, some of them by the political principles, and some by his poetic charm.
