Our concern is to examine what kind of competence contributes to developing listening comprehension ability. In teaching listening comprehension through "shadowing" and in "graded and intensive class", the following results were obtained. (1) Students who get high marks on a grammar test can develop into learners with high listening comprehension ability. (2) Students who get high marks on a listening comprehension test will develop, through instruction, into learners with high grammatical competence. (3) Students with low scores on a grammar test did not do well on a listening comprehension test. These results lead to the conclusion that listening comprehension ability and grammatical competence support each other. |
