subtilisのある種の株は、寒天平板上での増殖のはじめの段階において複雑に曲折する一本のひものような増殖様式をとった。その後、細胞のフィラメントは複雑に曲折しながら平面を埋めていった。これは一次元的な細胞の成長を二次元的な増殖に結びつけ、寒天平面を有効に利用してゆく過程であると考えられた。平面をある程度埋め尽くした後、増殖は2つの異なる要素を含んでいるように思われた。1つはコロニーの内部で主として働く、三次元的な増殖(立体化)であり、他の1つはコロニーの周辺で生じる、さらに広く平面を確保しようとする機構である。われわれは,この特異なマイクロコロニーの形態を,光学顕微鏡および走査電子顕微鏡(SEM)を用いて観察した。本報では,主としてSEMによるB.subtilisのコロニー形成の初期過程を述べ,コロニーは単細胞生物の集合体でありながら,統制された一個の多細胞生物のよう性質をも有していることを述べる。",
